The Story Behind the Song
Built around a prowling bass line, clipped percussion and a theatrical spoken-word coda, “Thriller” turns pop into a miniature horror film. Its unmistakable atmosphere helped make it one of Michael Jackson’s defining recordings.
The title track appeared on Jackson’s album *Thriller*, released in 1982 and produced by Quincy Jones. English songwriter Rod Temperton wrote the song, shaping its arrangement as a playful collision of funk, disco and horror-film drama. The closing narration, delivered by actor Vincent Price, gives the track its most startling change of scene; Price also contributed a laugh that became part of the song’s signature. The single reached number 10 on the UK chart, bringing the album’s dark, cinematic centrepiece to a British audience beyond the record’s initial release.
The accompanying film took the idea further. Directed by John Landis, its elaborate dance sequence and monster make-up gave the song a visual identity as distinctive as its sound, and helped establish the music video as an event rather than a simple promotional clip. The result was more than a novelty built around a spooky premise: precise musicianship and a tightly staged sense of suspense keep the performance in command. “Thriller” endures because its theatricality is matched by the discipline of its pop craft.
